Since Victorinox is the worlds largest manufacturer of pocket knives, and Opinel is the second largest maker, I don't understand why the hollow grind does still exist. It is proven by both Victorinox and Opinel that the convex and flat grind can be made in huge numbers at low cost. #5 jackknife, Aug 1, 2015.

A hollow grind means metal is only removed at the secondary cutting edge, as well as at the spine to a lesser degree. As a hollow grind assumes the shape of the outer diameter of the grinding wheel that sharpened it, different diameters of …

Answer (1 of 3): It is basically what it sounds like. A flat grind is what you typically see in knives, and is my personal favorite way to make them since it allows for easy sharpening. It's simply making a flat secondary edge (bevel), giving it a very simple look. A hollow …

The smaller the wheel, obviously the smaller the "hollow". The most common size wheel I have seen over the years is a 10". Personally, when I do produce a blade with a hollow grind, I will most often use a 10" wheel, but because I demand that the grind be "right", and not one of those aforementioned perversions, the size wheel is determined by ...

The reason I asked is that I read that a full hollow grind is more demanding of good technique where a half hollow grind isn't and since a beginner hasn't developed good technique yet a full hollow grind will punish you for your mistakes. But a beginner using a half hollow grind will be wishing for a full hollow grind after about a month.

Wiley Horne Yes, indeed. No problem hollow-grinding. I also use CBN, and on a low-speed Tormek, without issue. You will find it straightforward on your set-up. The problem arises, as Bruce says, if you don't hollow grind. Wiley

Hollow grinding has almost always been used in very high-quality knives and razors because it is easier to sharpen! As one sharpens the blade and gets past the initial wider part of the blade, the blade will become easier to sharpen and will very slowly become more difficult as the hollow grind becomes thicker up the blade.

A Simple Hollow Grinding Jig. This is a jig I threw together from things in my shop that makes it easy to create hollow-ground knife bevels. I would have made an instructable out of it, but I don't have any pictures of the process and it's pretty easy to see how the thing goes together any way. The metal widget with the springs is there just to ...

Buck changed to their super hollow grind with about a 12° per side edge bevel in about 2000. In the late 1990s Buck did a large project using a CATRA test machine to determine what blade profile would give the best performance. They found that the current blade profile gave superior results.

The high performance of aero-engines requires light-weight aero-engine blades, so hollow structures have been widely used in aero-engine blades. At present, the measurement of aero-engine blades is mainly carried out with coordinate measuring machines (CMM). This method can measure most of the aero-engine blades through direct contact. However, the complex surface, the chord width, and …

Hollow grind gives you a thinner primary for the thickness of the spine = better penetration to a certain depth, less weight, less metal to remove when restoring the edge. Because of that last part, it works very well in straight-razors. It can reduce friction and wedging in slicing a variety of materials that would otherwise drag along the ...

The grind is a measure of how thin the blade is. A full hollow will be much thinner than a wedge; thus, the full hollow will "flex" as you use it, especially if you use too much pressure. For this reason, most people will recommend that you start out with a 1/4 hollow or wedge grind as they are more "user friendly."

A hollow ground knife may not slide through the material as easily depending on the spine thickness and how high the grind goes on the knife. Reactions: Memcdowe. T. TEFL0N_D0N_81. Hollow Grind Calculator The Perplex of Convex The discussion comes around every once in a while about wheel diameter to stock thickness and how high a concave or hollow grind will be. The 'hollow' refers to the concave groove ground into the bottom surface of the skate blade; the 'radius of hollow,' or RoH, refers to the depth of that groove. 1. Your Skating Skill Should Influence the Radius of Hollow. A good rule of thumb when first learning how to play hockey is to keep your hollow radius at or around ½".

Hollow grind. The hollow grind is the predominate knife grind used by South African knifemakers. They have the lowest strength of all designs including scandi as a large portion of the blade is thin relative to the spine. They tend to cut well because they are easy to sharpen as per above.

Hollow grind a knife blade ground to create a characteristic concave, beveled cutting edge. This is characteristic of straight razors, used for shaving, and yields a very sharp but weak edge, which requires stropping for maintenance. Flat grind The blade tapers all …

A hollow ground blade. A hollow ground blade is a knife blade that has been ground down to create a characteristic concave, beveled edge along the cutting edge of the knife. This effect is accomplished by starting the grind below the midpoint of the knife, creating a small wedge with concave sides that is extremely sharp and very easy to care for.

A hollow grind is produced when you use a wheel to sharpen the edge of a knife. Because there is less material directly behind the edge, this type of edge is less durable (although the degree to this is more theoretical than in actual practice). A straight razor has a hollow grind. A straight razor has a very delicate edge, but the usage of the ...
